Frankly, I think there is a biological, genetic basis to instinctively wanting as much genetic diversity in our offspring as possible. In the absence of overriding non-biological factors (like one's ethnic culture pressuring one to marry/procreate only within one's own group), I think that this instinct becomes rather influential.
