Fundamentally, all of our productivity metrics are sabotaged by the fact that most of the world's physical output is produced in very environmentally-polluting and ecosystem-destroying ways, particularly in countries like mainland China that don't care about their environment. The other biggest share of productivity output is human health: How do you measure that? We need to measure productivity by the end-results that actually matter: If our product does not directly impinge on human health, is its production resulting in the increased health, or decreased health, of natural habitats?
