In the 1970s, they were protesting in support of the Khmer Rouge. I suspect that a reasonable person at the time in the 1970s would have known and acknowledged the atrocities that the Khmer Rouge were committing, but they didn't. So, actually, the modern pro-terrorism militants aren't all that different.
