Naw man, you don't really supply an effective counter-argument to this common sense wisdom. There's no way for a landlord to avoid charging more than what a mortgage on a comparable property would cost the renter. Landlords do have mortgages too, as you point out, and they also need a profit in addition, whereas if you buy your own house, you pocket the profit.
