On the contrary, I'd argue that there are many examples of it ending well. It's analogous to all the examples in history when barbarians begged to become citizens of an empire, every now and then a Germanic tribe begging to be part of the Roman sphere, and it's analogous to small Greek city states wanting to ally with Athens in the Delian League.
