So, why haven't these cooperatives taken off more broadly and become far more popular? My reading of the cooperative literature in general is that it's due to the inflexibility of this one vote per member system, which creates conflict when some members cannot meet normal payments, and creates a barrier to entry as the cooperative becomes more valuable and so lower middle income earners cannot afford to buy in.
