There's a big difference between preventing something from happening, versus doing something proactively. The proper role of government is limited merely to preventing violence, which is doing something "for" people in a sense of providing security for people. But the more we rely upon the police powers of government to force domestic dissenters to obey ideas they disagree with by doing things "for" people proactively like gov welfare, the more we weaken ourselves by setting up this perceive "separate" institution of government that's supposed to be doing things "for" us that really we all should be figuring out ways to voluntarily take care of ourselves without using government's police powers.
