This is actually a bad analogy, and the British Empire deserves credit in human history for being the first empire to eradicate slavery. It's a bad analogy because the prevailing societal norm is not to abuse one's partner; however, the prevailing societal norm throughout all of human history was to have slavery. An abuser is simply returning to the societal norm when they seemingly repent and bring their significant other to care; however, the British Empire was bucking all of human history when it became the first to outlaw slavery. And it's a terrible analogy for a second reason: The British Empire aggressively eradicated slavery in all lands it could influence; it's as if the abuser not only repented, brought their significant other to treatment, but also aggressively defended other abused partners.
