This isn't unique to Gimli's family. Tolkien's entire portrayal of dwarvish culture is akin to that of Middle Eastern cultures in which women have hardly any public presence. On the other hand, Peter Jackson (maybe getting this from actual Tolkien lore, 60% chance of that) has Gimli say in the movies that dwarf women are everywhere; they just don't distinguish themselves from men. But still, your article's general agenda you're trying to prove here is really well proven by all of dwarvish culture, but that's because Tolkien was basing it on a real culture: Middle Eastern culture.
